Wired Vs Wireless Home Security System
The cheapest home alarm system is better than having no alarm at all. Ideally, it
is recommended to hardwire your burglar alarm system for durability, sustainability,
longevity and the fact that it wont be prone to interference like wireless burglar
alarm systems.
Wireless burglar alarm systems provide great convenience as they can be installed
by most DIY’ers but a professionally installed hardwired burglar alarm system offers
significant benefits.
Hardwired Alarm Planning
When designing your home security system the first priority is to think about hardwiring
magnetic door sensors to as many doors as possible. Wiring the doors is the key
to a successful home alarm installation as the burglar will most likely go through
a door at some point, when breaking into your home. Then try to do the same with
your windows. It will be more expensive and more difficult to hardwire your window
sensors but it’s definitely worth it. By covering both doors and windows you can
be assured your alarm system will always trigger.
If you can’t afford to hardwire all of your windows then, at the very least, install
interior PIR motion detectors, especially if you have a second floor. There are
different kinds of motion detector for different applications. For example, some
PIR sensors can ignore the movement of your pets whilst still active. It will be
less expensive to install motion detectors rather than hardwiring all of your windows.
PIR’s can protect several windows at once whereas all windows need sensors.
Wireless Monitoring
It is recommend to purchase a security system that supports wireless monitoring.
These are based on regular cell phone technology and when a burglar attempts to
break into your property they generally cut exposed wires, assuming they may be
phone cables. A wireless monitoring alarm system will be transmitting without the
burglar realising. Install the wireless monitoring alarm system in your attic for
best signal strength. Wireless monitoring can be as cheap as $17 per month and it’s
great for homes that don’t have a phone line.
Home alarm monitoring gives peace of mind that your home is being “watched” 24 hours
a day. When your home alarm system is triggered, your system dials the monitoring
system company who will immediately attempt to ring you back. If the person picking
up your phone cannot provide the correct code-word or there is no answer then they
will call the police for you.
Positioning of Alarm Siren
Most home owners install their burglar alarm sirens on the exterior of their property.
This offers the benefits of being not only visible - thus putting the intruder off
before they even step onto your land - but neighbors and people walking by can easily
hear the siren. However there are benefits of installing the alarm siren inside
the home. It will scare the intruder as the noise will be deafening. If the alarm
goes off accidentally, it will not annoy your neighbors and a happy neighbour that
is not constantly bothered by a repeat accidental alarm will most likely investigate.
